The Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel in Bella Vista was one of a handful of Glass Chapels designed by Fay Jones — gothic arches in glass and steel, an ethereal light from outside flooding every surface with golden light until the inside and outside become the same place.
When I painted it, I was chasing something I couldn't quite name. A juxtaposition of nature, light, and geometry. A space created in between. One Saturday at the art market in Bentonville, a colleague of Jones happened to stop at stop by to look at my Cooper Chapel Painting and told me that was exactly what Jones had intended all along.
It's good when a painting knows something before you do.
