The Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel in Bella Vista was one of a handful of Glass Chapels designed by Fay Jones — gothic arches in glass and steel, the surrounding forest flooding every surface with green light until the inside and outside become the same place.
When I painted it, I was chasing something I couldn't quite name. A juxtaposition of nature and geometry. A space created in between. One Saturday at the farmers market, a colleague of Jones happened to stop at this painting and told me that was exactly what Jones had intended all along.
It's good when a painting knows something before you do.
